Felix Sarco - Felix Sarco
CD review by Mike Evans of Electric City Magazine
THE GOOD: Ummmmm... since they are a local band, I guess I'll use this "good" section to apologize in advance for the following review. I tried guys - really I did. Just try to keep the hate mail to a minimum.
THE BAD: Where do I begin? As I plunged head first into Felix Sarco's self-titled debut CD, I began searching for a hook, a riff, even a solid groove - anything that would grab me! Unfortunately, I never found it.
Try to imagine Canada's irritating, pretentious, prog-rock gods Rush morphing with a hippy-dippy jam band like Phish. Sprinkle some overly dramatic vocal deliveries a la Styx over the top. Then occasionally toss in the tuneless drifting of the Mars Volta. Finally, every time a catchy melody does rear its ugly head, squash that damn thing by suddenly changing tempos and going off on some jazz-funk-fusion-metal tangent.
Look, if you're the type of guy who listens to a Yes album because you think Chris Squire possesses "awesome bass technique," then Felix Sarco may be the band for you! The rest of us will simply have a hard time getting through these directionless opuses.
BUY IT?: NO! Need to support a local band? You always have the Sw!ms.
